The establishment of the Mississippi State University-Meridian (MSU-M) Mental and Behavioral Health Clinic aims to enhance the availability of mental and behavioral healthcare providers and services in the surrounding area. The clinic is designed to be a training site for current MSU students and provide community services.

The Medical Billing Specialist reports to the Clinic Director and is responsible for all financial management issues in the Clinic, including invoicing, insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid reimbursement, cash and credit card transactions, practitioner credentialing for insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid, and financial reconciliation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Obtain pre-authorizations from insurance companies.
2. Verify health insurance coverage.
3. Conduct pre-certifications for services.
4. Ensure client demographic and insurance information is accurate and up to date.
5. Electronically submit claims to insurance companies. Investigate, resubmit, and appeal any
denied claims.
6. Prepare and send statements and invoices for clients, documenting amounts paid by
insurance companies and balance due by clients.
7. Record and reconcile payments from clients.
8. Communicate with clients about billing needs or questions.
9. Monitor monthly billing statements and clinic budgets. Reconcile charges with expenses
every month.
10. Manage inventory levels and monitor expiration dates. Maintain relationships with and
connections with vendors to ensure proper pricing and supply chain concerns are
addressed.
11. Other data-related tasks as required.
12. Computer skills for electronic billing, processing claims, and medical records.
13. Work directly with clinical director, professors, and patients.

Minimum Qualifications:

Certificate, Associate, or Applied Science degree Medical Office Management Technology,
Medical Billing, Accounting, HealthCare Administration or related field. 2 years experience. 

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree in related field.
2. Minimum of 3 years of experience as a medical biller.
3. Certification as a medical biller.
4. Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in all work.
5. History of maintaining of HIPAA compliance and policies to manage breaches.
6. Familiar with mental health and medical billing codes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Background in health care administration, office management, or medical billing.
2. Successful completion of background check.
3. Background in setting up practitioners on insurance panels, recertification, maintenance of
required signatures, and processing of all claims.
4. Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in all work.
5. Understanding of billing software and Electronic Medical Records, billing codes, online billing
systems, and maintenance of records.
6. Ability to understand and process funds (cash, credit cards, debit cards, and electronic
checks) based upon insurance claims, deductibles aligned with individual insurance plans.
7. Knowledge of HIPAA and best practices in compliance.
8. Must be able to multi-task and manage time effectively.
9. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a commitment to using respectful,
inclusive, and affirming language.
10. Outstanding problem-solving and organizational abilities
11. Dedicated team player and works well with all staff.
