The Associate Director of Campus Planning manages the university’s facility space planning and internal facility improvement design.

Salary Grade:  

Please see Staff Compensation Structure or Skilled Crafts and Service Maintenance Compensation Schedule for salary ranges.  For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Directs, coordinates and produces design for facility improvement projects. Collaborate with project managers to develop estimates and provide support as required during construction.
2. Evaluate customer requests facility based on an assessment of campus requirements, the existing facility inventory, and master plan guidelines.
3. Responsible for campus space management and planning. Coordinate relocation of faculty, staff and programs affected by capital improvement projects. Prepare and present reports, presentations, sequence plans to Campus Leadership.
4. Oversee development of space management reports to IHL, Bureau of Buildings, etc.
5. Develop and maintain project budgets during design phase along with confirmation of funding sources. Coordinate and review estimates during each phase of design.
6. Facilitate transition from design phase to construction phase with project managers.
7. Responsible for ensuring required approvals are received during the design phase. This includes but is not limited to MDAH, IHL, State Fire Marshal, MDEQ, etc
8. Coordinate plan reviews with users, stakeholders and other campus groups.
9. Ensures that design complies with the MSU standards and the campus master plan along with applicable industry codes, laws, standards, and design practices.
10. Assists with long range planning efforts to ensure campus development adheres to the University’s long term strategic goals.
11. Provide management and supervision of campus planning staff members.
12. Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Building Science, Engineering, Construction Project Administration or related field.
Experience: 3 years experience in the planning, design, and construction of buildings

• Knowledge of federal, state and local safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures
• Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures

• Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications
• Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Occasional and/or light lifting required. Limited exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., but none to the point of being disagreeable. May involve minor safety hazards.

Externally imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one’s control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; may involve conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis.

Job frequently requires standing, walking, reaching, climbing or balancing, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.

Job occasionally requires sitting, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to no more than 25 pounds.

Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
