The Diagnostic Imaging Residency at Mississippi State University is a three and one half year, clinical based program designed to educate residents in the art and science of diagnostic and interventional imaging. The program provides a post-DVM individual with educational experience in both small and large animal diagnostic imaging, under the supervision of Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Radiology, preparing them for ACVR board certification. Residents have the option to complete a Master's degree during the program. Learning objectives for the residency follow those established by the ACVR and include detailed studies in applied gross anatomy, pathophysiology, physics of radiology, radiation biology and safety, alternate imaging, special procedures, and critical image analysis and differential diagnosis in all modalities available. Successful residents will have the opportunity to pursue career goals in teaching, research, clinical service or specialty practice. A certificate of Residency Training is presented after successful completion of the 3.5 year program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The resident is responsible for assisting with radiographic ultrasonographic, computed tomographic, and magnetic imaging studies under the supervision of an ACVR Diplomate. Case experience is gained through interaction with clinicians and patients from small and large animal rotations of the hospital. The resident is expected to monitor the clinical progress of patients undergoing diagnostic imaging procedures. Emergency radiology duty is shared with full-time radiology technicians, faculty, and fellow residents. The resident will periodically present case and topic rounds and lectures to interns and veterinary students. Regular teaching activities will also include demonstration of imaging techniques and basic interpretive skills to veterinary students and veterinary technology students. Research collaboration, graduate course work, and opportunities for publication will also be available throughout the residency.

Minimum Qualifications:

Prerequisites other than being a Graduate of a College of Veterinary Medicine: Graduate of AVMA - accredited veterinary school. At least one year of veterinary practice experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to those candidates who have completed a one-year internship or equivalent practice experience.

Excellent judgment and decision-making skills.
Time management skills.
Ability to work in a fast paced environment.
Ability to pay close attention to detail.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Regularly involves lifting, bending or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., with one often to the point of being objectionable.
Injuries may require professional treatment.
