This position will teach up to 12 credit hours of courses per semester depending on service commitments. The service component will involve development, growth, and sustainment of a community engagement program as well as a recruitment and retention program for the department.

Salary Grade:  UC

For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following examples are intended as illustrations only of the various types of duties assigned in this position. The absence of specific statements of duties does not exclude those tasks from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment of the position.

1. Teach up to 12 credit hours of undergraduate/graduate courses in Physics and/or Astronomy each semester.
2. Demonstrate a high commitment to quality teaching and student learning.
3. Maintain office hours in accordance with departmental policy.
4. Develop a community engagement program to connect with students in the local region.
5. Utilize the community engagement program to engage in recruiting students into the undergraduate program.
6. Support student retention efforts, including serving as a departmental advisor for physics student organizations, groups, or clubs.
7. Participate in departmental, college, university, and scientific community service functions and committees.
8. Adhere to all federal, state, and university policies governing academic and institutional operations.
9. Opportunities for teaching release can be obtained through grant-funded buyouts.
10. Summer teaching opportunities are often available but are not guaranteed.
11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Ph.D. in Physics or a related field with a strong background in physics.
2. Experience teaching general physics courses.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Extensive teaching experience with undergraduate/graduate students.
2. A background in physics education research and/or community engagement with physics.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Thorough knowledge of undergraduate/graduate physics course topics, best practices in physics education, and a willingness to participate collegially in a broad department.
2. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and an ability to employ these skills in a variety of teaching environments
3. Strong interpersonal skills and creativity for implementing and encouraging involvement in community engagement efforts

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

1. Standing for long periods of time lecturing class.
2. Sitting at a desk working on syllabi, class lecture, grading papers, etc.
3. Regularly meeting with groups of various sizes in community spaces, which may include ones outside campus.
