Manages a variety of activities, projects, grants, and requests for services from external clients and customers, as well as internal MSU and Advanced Composites Institute (ACI) related projects. The project manager will plan and implement projects associated with advanced manufacturing, resin infusion, and resin transfer molding. This position will be primarily focused on our industry-related partners like Boeing, Aurora Flight Sciences, and Northrop Grumman as well as our long-standing research efforts with the Federal Aviation Administration. This individual may be required to manage and lead a team as necessary to complete the project. The projects are manufacturing-related and will require working in a cross-functional team environment where multiple priorities and deadlines must be managed simultaneously.

Salary Grade:  16

Department Profile:

The Advanced Composites Institute, or ACI, focuses on pioneering transformational composite technologies in a variety of critical sectors, including aerospace, civil, military, energy, automotive and other emerging markets. It was created at MSU with the donation of a revolutionary stitched composite process and equipment originally developed at NASA by pioneering scientist Marvin B. Dow.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Interface with engineers, scientists, and subject matter experts across multiple disciplines to deliver project results.
2. Collaborate with ACI staff and external clients in coordinating and managing projects. These clients include industry partners, internal stakeholders, and other MSU departments.
3. Serve as liaison between technical and business teams to ensure seamless execution of work.
4. Develop and maintain relationships with private industry, academia, and state and federal agencies while promoting awareness and enhancing the visibility of core research capacities.
5. Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to organize, plan, and execute project activities on schedule and within budget.
6. Identify and manage project risks and implement mitigation strategies as needed.
7. Support tracking and reporting of project success metrics and data collection essential for meeting sponsor requirements.
8. Assist in proposal development activities, including identifying opportunities for grant funding and ensuring compliance with sponsor requirements.
9. Develop and implement systems and processes to establish and maintain records for the operating unit.
10. Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education Bachelor’s degree Engineering, Aviation, Project Management, Business
Experience 6 years Directly related to the job duties and responsibilities specified

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of AS9100 certification requirements
• PMP certification
• Master’s degree or higher

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Frequent interruptions based on changing priorities; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor.
• Job occasionally requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting to 50 pounds.
• Some travel required.
• Vision requirements: ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
