The Shackouls Technical Communication Program (STCP) in The Bagley College of Engineering is seeking an instructor to teach Professional Communication for Engineers (GE 3513). GE 3513 is a junior-level writing course required for all engineering undergraduates. The primary objective of the course is to help students build and strengthen practical, adaptable writing and presenting skills that will prepare them for workplace communication expectations. Course content includes paper and presentation assignments, teamwork skills, and a strong focus on engineering ethics. The instructor position also supports the program’s service efforts within the BCoE. The instructor is under the administrative supervision of the Dean in the Bagley College of Engineering but reports directly to the Technical Communications Coordinator. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track 9-month position.

Salary Grade:  UC

For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Teach Professional Communication for Engineers in face-to-face and online formats.
2. Develop course content that reflects the communication expectations for engineering graduates.
3. Contribute to departmental and college service, including collecting and reporting accreditation data.
4. Assist engineering faculty in enhancing the writing and speaking in engineering courses.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in English or other writing discipline with experience teaching writing at the college level.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience writing or editing in technical or scientific disciplines; experience teaching oral communication skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of best practices in teaching, including implementing active learning strategies.
2. Ability to grade writing for grammar and mechanics, as well as a conciseness and clarity.
3. Knowledge of learning management systems, such as Canvas.
4. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
5. Strong organizational skills.
6. Self-motivated and detail-oriented.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. No or very limited exposure to physical risk. Limited physical effort required. Vision requirements; Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
