We provide communications training to all levels of our hospital including house officers which is provided as graduate level course work. MSU-CVM boasts a variety of specialty services including internal medicine, general surgery, anesthesiology, neurology, diagnostic imaging, dentistry, critical care, clinical pathology, anatomical pathology, oncology, ophthalmology, theriogenology, and dermatology as well as a 24/7 emergency department staffed by senior emergency veterinarians. There is also an opportunity to work with satellite locations including the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Gulfport, MS.

The Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine is offering a three-year residency program in comparative veterinary anesthesiology, concurrent with a Master’s degree in veterinary science. This program is offered in accordance with the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia’s (ACVAA) residency training standards, which may be accessed online at www.acvaa.org. Residents are expected to fulfill the credentials for their Master’s degree and for ACVAA board certification prior to completion of the residency. Residents will be evaluated semi-annually and, upon completion of the program, are expected to pursue ACVAA diplomate status. This program is under the supervision of two ACVAA diplomates and is supported by two Assistant Clinical Professors and eight certified anesthesia technicians.

The Small Animal Surgery residency at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine is a three-year program. The primary objectives of the program are to train specialists in small animal surgery and to prepare residents for board certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Educational opportunities toward this end include daily case rounds, weekly journal club, weekly textbook reading assignments, monthly hospital-wide morbidity, and mortality rounds, and twice-yearly mock board examinations. Residents will present in-house seminars twice yearly. Presentation of original research at a national meeting by the end of the residency is encouraged.

The Neurosurgery/Neurology (NNS) Residency at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine consists of advanced clinical training in medical and surgical aspects of canine and feline neurology. There will be opportunities for the residents to consult on neurologic cases in large animals and occasionally wildlife and exotic species. The resident will work closely with the three faculty neurologists, and other neurology/neurosurgery residents, interns, and the students on the NNS rotation to provide the highest quality of patient care.

The internship will consist of a 80% commitment to the NNS and 10 - 20% to the small animal emergency/critical care service (daytime only 3 of 4 weekends with the previous Friday off).
