Position Function:
Plan, supervise, schedule, and assign the work of the building maintenance staff and building maintenance section.
Salary Grade: BMT-S

Department Profile:
One of three departments in the College of Forest Resources, the Department of Sustainable Bioproducts activities include undergraduate/graduate instructions, research and service programs in natural resources.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Estimate, plan, and coordinate building maintenance, construction, renovation, and related projects.
2. Supervise, schedule, and assign work of the building maintenance crew(s) and outside contractors, and monitor their work in order to assure proper staffing and quality standards.
3. Inspect jobs, equipment and tools in order to assure compliance with codes, guidelines, university standards, and safety rules.
4. Interview, recommend for employment, train, evaluate and discipline the building maintenance crew and student support staff.
5. In accordance with MSU purchasing policies, verify and approve requisitions; order, control and account for supplies and equipment in order to maintain an adequate inventory; document and approve job time and materials used.
6. Inspect plans, prints, sketches and specifications for projects and related jobs and provide technical assistance. 7. Evaluate and test new products, equipment and processes.
8. Respond to questions, complaints and needs of all levels of university employees, students, parents and the public in order to provide technical information and assistance.
9. In accordance with MSU purchasing policies, audit and oversee vendor bills and charges; ensure that all charges are accurate.
10. Initiate and prepare written and computer generated special, periodic, fiscal, time study, and labor reports, and maintain records.
11. Interact with Department Heads, other University Management and other Skilled Crafts Supervisors in order to review, discuss and coordinate work.
12. This position has responsibility for the health and/or safety of others. Responsibilities include overseeing the safe use of equipment and materials and maintaining safety standards for the support staff when working in hazardous or dangerous conditions.
13. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or GED.
2. Eight years of experience in commercial, industrial or residential construction or building maintenance using conventional and innovative techniques.
3. Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous supervisory experience.
Post secondary training or education in a relevant field.
Knowledge of building access systems, security systems and fire alarm systems.
Knowledge of pest control practices.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade.
* Knowledge of applicable building codes, rules, and regulations.
* Ability to exercise tact and discretion with customers and the public, including reasonable standards of personal appearance.
* Basic computer proficiency (word processing, email, spreadsheets, etc.)
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
1. Exposed to extreme weather conditions when working outdoors.
2. Risk of severe burn when working with boiler systems.
3. Possible exposure to hazardous materials and with pesticides.
4. Must be able to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends and holidays.
5. Must be able to climb ladders, crawl under buildings, bend, lift and access spaces such as attics and basements.
