Position Function:

The Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems Extension (CAVS-E), satellite site at EMCC’s Communiversity, located in Columbus, MS, is focused on providing engineering training and technical assistance to manufacturing-related industries. Major activities include teaching professional development workshops, such as Lean, Six Sigma, and Problem Solving, among others, and conducting on-site engineering projects.

Employees hired into Intermittent positions are limited to working no more than 720 hours per fiscal year.

Salary Grade:  UC

CAVS-E is an engineering outreach center focused on supporting advanced manufacturing and innovation across Mississippi. The center works directly with industry, state entities, and educational partners to improve manufacturing competitiveness through professional development training, on-site technical assistance projects, and technology adoption. CAVS-E drives economic growth by helping manufacturers across Mississippi solve real-world challenges, expand their capabilities, and innovate for the future.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Interns will work alongside industry-experienced engineers to:

* Perform engineering project services for industrial clients to support expanding economic development activities within the state and region, including:
Process and Continuous Improvement
Time Studies and Work Measurement
Work Instruction and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Development
Simulation Modeling
Product Design and Development
Fixture and Tooling Design
Automated Business Processes
* Set up and integrate advanced automation equipment in the CAVS-E Experiential Learning Lab (C.E.L.L.), including:
Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
Collaborative Robots
Vision Systems
Industrial Sensors
Artificial Intelligence
* Demonstrate and showcase automation technologies to industry partners and workshop participants, and assist in designing custom automation solutions for real-world industrial applications.
* Participate in training opportunities available at CAVS-E; provide support to CAVS-E team members in the development and delivery of training for industrial clients and K-12 outreach related to i4.0 advanced technology.
* Document results of industry projects and benefits to customers.

This internship provides real industry engagement, exposure to emerging technologies, and the chance to contribute to transformative projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

Students enrolled in engineering, computer science, manufacturing, mechatronics, technology or maintenance programs at post-secondary schools that have completed their freshman year. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required, with an interest in manufacturing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

•No or very limited physical effort required.
•No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
•Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
•Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
•No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
•Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
