The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally recognized research (75%), and teaching (25%) program in dairy foods/dairy processing for this 9-month tenure track position. The position may be cross appointed among the two departments of Animal and Dairy Science and Biochemistry, Nutrition and Health Promotion depending on the teaching and research expertise and interests of the candidate. For candidates with experience or appointment at the Associate- or Full-Professor levels the position may also include co-appointment as The Edward D. Custer Endowed Professorship in Dairy Foods which carries with it the professorship title, an additional salary stipend and some programmatic support. The successful candidate will also administer the separate “Bearden Endowment" for dairy science/dairy foods student club/organization support. In addition, this position will be an integral part of the new Food Science Innovation Hub initiative in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station and will work closely with the Director of the Food Science Innovation Hub on food science-related initiatives.

Teaching responsibilities involve didactic teaching and clinical training of professional students, interns, residents, and graduate students. Service responsibilities involve clinical case management, rotating emergency duty, and consultation with private practitioners. Clinical duties in the Small Animal Medicine service will be shared with four other faculty members. The service currently has three residents enrolled in an ACVIM-approved three-year combined residency and thesis-driven master’s program. Participation in the college’s continuing education and clinical research program is strongly encouraged, as is the development of a specific area of clinical and research focus and expertise. External grant acquisition and supervision of postgraduate degree students is encouraged and supported, and initial funding is available to support the development of research initiatives.

This gift will fund the construction of a new research building and the creation of three new faculty positions, along with new staff and graduate student positions. We seek to assemble an outstanding team of faculty to seize this opportunity and conduct research on laminitis, a painful and crippling disease of horses. The new team will consist of one faculty member at the professor level, one at the associate professor level, and one at the assistant professor level. The new 14,000-square-foot facility will offer both clinical and benchtop research space, as well as the equipment needed for advanced research. Graduate student stipends will be available to each faculty member, and a substantial amount of funding will be available to the team annually for research on the prevention and treatment of laminitis in pleasure or working horses.
