Department Profile:

The Center for Distance Education (CDE) serves Mississippi State University in many aspects of distance education. CDE offers support to academic colleges and departments engaged in distance education at MSU, while also offering support services to any MSU student enrolled in distance education programs and courses.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following examples are intended as illustrations only of the various types of duties assigned in positions allocated to this classification.   1. Coordinates all distance education courses, certifications, and programs offered by Mississippi State University.
  2. Provides quality customer service for all distance students throughout their academic careers.
  3. Works closely with academic department heads and faculty offering distance education programs and courses and develops partnerships with new ones.
  4. Collaborates with a variety of internal and external University offices to provide or revise existing services and support for distance students.
  5. Promotes new distance education ventures and the expansion of current distance courses, certifications, and programs.
  6. Completes and supports Strategic Plan projects and objectives.
  7. Engages in non-credit workshops as requested.
  8. Markets distance education opportunities throughout the state, region, and nation.
  9. Informs the Manager and the appropriate Department Head of any student concerns.
  10. Adheres to deadline dates set by the Manager.
  11. Attends/Presents at conferences, expos, and workshops each year, pending budget and Manager approval.
  12. Conducts and coordinates distance student recruitment, workshops, and orientations.
  13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Education, Business, Technology, or related field and
4 years work experience in public education delivery, preferably in a higher education setting; 3 years work experience in distance education.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree; 5 years work experience in distance education at a public university.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to use a variety of database and spreadsheet programs
  • Strong research, writing, analytical, and technological skills
  • Working knowledge of distance education instructional delivery methods, market trends, and compliance issues
  • Expertise in promoting, marketing, and implementing distance education programs and courses for academic credit at the institutional and cross-institutional levels
  • Familiar with conference and workshop coordination
  • Comfortable with multi-tasking and meeting stringent deadlines
  • Experience with grant-writing and implementation

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment
