Department Profile:

The Office of Research Compliance is a unit of the Vice president for Research and Economic Development. The Office of Research Compliance seeks to respectfully guide and serve the Mississippi State University community while engaging in research through compliance and ethical practices in order to protect the University, researchers, and research subjects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• implementing University and Institutional Review Board (IRB) policies and directives;
• educating members of the MSU community in order to establish and maintain a culture of compliance with Federal regulations and institutional policies relevant to the protection of human subjects;
• reviewing IRB applications, facilitating revisions to submitted protocols, notifying principal investigators (PIs) of IRB decisions, requesting additional information when required and coordinating supplementary materials required by the IRB in a timely manner;
• assisting with activities to maintain the University's Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc. (AAHRPP) accreditation in good standing;
• monitoring compliance with IRB-approved protocols;
• immediately inform the IRB Officer of significant staff, procedural or protocol non-compliance issues;
• recommending changes to standard operating procedures to increase efficiency and effectiveness;
• assisting in the quality assurance of the HRPP by identifying deficiencies and recommending solutions and procedural changes;
• providing guidance on the IRB application and review process and interpreting OHRP, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations;
• ensuring that IRB records are maintained appropriately;
• providing education and assistance to IRB members and HRPP staff; and
• interacting professionally with a wide variety of internal and external contacts such as Principal Investigators, Division and Department Heads, federal and state agency representatives, site visitors, and sponsors of research.

Other activities related to the goals of the office may be assigned as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 2 years of relevant work experience in a regulatory compliance or legal environment or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certified IRB Professional (CIP)
Knowledge of OHRP, DHHS regulations (45 CFR 46), FDA regulations, and HIPAA.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• experience with data management and word processing systems;
• strong interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact professionally and effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts;
• ability to establish priorities and react promptly to a large variety of requests and needs, sometimes in stressful situations;
• ability to work independently and close attention to detail.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

  • No unusual physical requirements. Requires limited lifting of files and records and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
  • Frequent external imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one’s control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; involves conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis.
  • Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
